Here are maps in Garmin image file format people have created from OSM data. Sites are listed by continent, then by country alphabetically, then by suspected usefulness (eg. sites which cover a whole continent and are updated regularly are listed first.) Maps offered worldwide or for a continent are often offering country downloads - hence they are only listed once and not for each region again. As OpenStreetMap is changing fast - only maps updated during the last 6 month should be listed. Permanently Dead links - please remove the entry.

Don't get me wrong, Google Maps, especially since you can download offline maps, is a great tool and I myself often use it to integrate the cartography of my Garmin Montana 600, but when it comes to planning a trip or a hike, there are - from my personal point of view - more viable alternatives to download free Garmin maps. I have already told you about the best GPS apps for bicycle touring, here instead I want to focus on useful resources both for planning from desktop and free cartography to be installed on your GPS device.
The reference resource for free Garmin maps is definitely OpenStreetMap and in the site's wiki, you can also find information on free cartography for your Garmin GPS or other devices to download. Below I will try to make a personal but complete list of the resources that we generally use for our GPS device or smartphone GPS apps. Virtually all the sites that provide this free cartography are based on OpenStreetMap data, modifying the layers and their display according to the specific field of use.
Since my use is specific for cycling and mountain biking, these maps will be aimed mainly at those who practice cycle tourism, gravel, MTB or trekking, but they can also be fine for those with other purposes (road trips, other outdoor activities...). But no more chatter! Let's start discovering the best free Garmin maps that you can download on your GPS device.
This is one of the sites that we use the most, especially when it comes to planning a trip or an MTB excursion in our peninsula. The maps are specially designed, as the name implies, for mountain biking but in reality, they can also be used for cycling or any other outdoor activity. There are four types of visualization that differ only in the thickness of the lines, to adapt to the type of GPS device on which you want to install them, while the colours are always the same. From the site, it is possible to download the executable file for Windows for free with which to install the maps and then view them on a program such as Basecamp or Qmapshack. About Mac users: image files that can be copied directly to the satellite navigator are not free or can be obtained with some steps "transforming" the downloaded Windows files into files compatible with Mac, but this is a topic for another study. In this article, you can read our guide about OpenMTBmap.
Perhaps one of the best alternatives to free Gramin maps for GPS devices from OpenMTBmap for those who want to plan a bike trip or an MTB excursion. In addition to online maps, on the subdomain Garmin.OpenTopoMap.org it is possible to download offline maps for Garmin GPS for free both in executable format (for Basecamp or Qmapshack, for example), and in image format to be uploaded directly to the device. Contour lines are available as an optional layer, then relief shading, and a good level of detail of paths and roads. Also in this case I imagine that the image files can also be used on devices other than Garmin, even if I don't have any, I can't be sure.
As often happens, this list of sites where to download free Garmin maps for GPS devices is certainly incomplete and I hope to be able to keep it updated as much as possible, so if you have better suggestions than the previous ones, do not hesitate to write it in the comments below, or contact us to let us know.
It works completely different for me. I have uploaded several logs to the social maps, like a month ago, and none has been put to Social Maps for download. Also, when I choose some area and download it (btw. the file that downloads is a .zip file with several files inside with .at5 format). After puting it into the SD card nothing happens. I have a Hook Reveal 5
All the above instruction are working. I load the above australia map into the mapsource and it is woring. However when I transfer it to SD card and put it inside my garmin 205, it does not work. Can you assist?
looking at the picture you attached.I see that you have a lot of european maps.I just need the french one.My garmin nuvi 265T is already pre-loaded with North america.Do you think I can add just the french map?Do you know how I can hold of a french map?thanks
Just simply do not connect to the internet. install the apk file provided by rexdl. The com.sygic.aura/files/ folder will be created as soon as the app has been opened once. With a file explorer you can now copy and replace the Android, Maps and Res folder within the com.sygic.aura/files/ folder. In an earlier stage you have already downloaded the preferred roadmaps. These roadmap folders(which look like this: cze.ta.2017.03) can now be directly copied into the Maps folder. Restart The Sygic app and enjoy.
The easiest way to download OSM is to visit garmin.openstreetmap.nl. Just select the region you want, enter your email address, and then wait for your maps to be compiled. You will recieve an email when your maps are ready for download. In the email will be a link to a page that will list several different file types. You decide if you want an .exe file (to install in MapSource), a GMAPSUPP.IMG file (to transfer directly to your GPS), or several other options. There is a good forum post with instructions over on Horizons Unlimited.
Alternately, you can download the entire map set via osm2garmin.com. The compressed planet.osm file is currently 22 GB. Yes, even on speedy internet, it will take hours. It is possible to download only one continent or region at a time. See the OSM wiki download page for more info.
If you want to contribute your routes or waypoints download JOSM. This program imports the tracks from your GPS and lets you compare them to the OSM maps. You can decide how to classify the road and what to change or upload.
CENRUT (Central America) This is a great open source map collection specific to Central America. It covers everywhere south of Mexico through Panama. In some places it is more accurate than OSM, in other places it is lacking. I would download with OSM and check your destination on MapSource.
TrackSource (Brazil) The highest recommended free maps for Brazil. They actually mark every single speedbump in these maps. Much better than OSM for southern Brazil, up to Rio. Can't comment on the rest of the country, because we didn't visit.
In some cases, when you download the Mac install file from OSM , you will need two free additional programs. Garmin MapManager is needed to install the map from OSM onto BaseCamp and Garmin MapInstall is needed to transfer the maps from BaseCamp to your GPS device. Whether you need these extra programs or not seems to depend on the ages of your GPS. Huge thanks to Bryan at Southern Tip Trip for this info!
EasyGPS is the fast and easy way to upload and download geocaches, addresses, waypoints, routes, and tracks between your Windows computer and your Garmin nüvi GPS. Use EasyGPS to back up and organize your GPS data, print maps, or load new waypoints onto your GPS for your next hike or geocaching adventure.
Simply searching google for 'How Do I Update myAudi navigation maps for free' gets you lots of results claiming to be able to sell you the correct files. However, in this tutorial, I am going to walk you through the steps required to do it for free, all without the need for OBDeleven or VCDS, the files are available for all VAG cars that have a similar MMI system, and thus the update has been pulled from VW's site as they still make the files available for anyone to download. 2ff7e9595c
